Republicans Continue To Trend Toward "No Rules" COVID Enhancing Policy
Contributor: Wy Spano
Minnesota Republicans are stuck on an individual rights solution for controlling COVID-19.
The centerpiece of their policy is attempts to take away Governor Walz' considerable powers conferred by his use of Executive Orders. That most public health experts suggest such executive action is crucial in controlling the pandemic doesn't seem to bother GOP leadership.
Another oddity is Republican resistance to wearing masks.
A new flank in the individual freedom vs COVID war happened this week when Republicans surprised the DFL by taking up and rejecting the appointment of the Department of Labor and Industry Commissioner Nancy Leppinick. The reason seemed to be Leppinick was doing too good a job following Governor Walz' order in terms of aggressively protecting workers from COVID on the job. Business (and even a few in labor) thought Leppinick was too aggressive. But labor generally approved of her.
Bottom line: good public servant dropped because Republicans don't seem able to consider the fact that public health means we all have to agree to protect each other.
